Salvador was founded in 1549 as “the first Portuguese possession overseas” to become also the first capital of Brazil. Built on the top of a cliff overlooking the All Saints Bay, the world’s largest tropical bay, resulting in the city being divided into Upper Town and Lower Town, powered by the thriving sugar industry.
Capital of the State of Bahia and the 3rd largest city in Brazil, with 50 km of beaches, Salvador is also the largest complex of colonial architecture and baroque in Latin America. It is no coincidence that this city of contrasts, rich with its cultural diversity, result of mixing and convergence of different cultural customs over five centuries of history, giving rise to one of the most fascinating cities in the world.
Considered the “cultural capital of the country” and the most African city of Brazil. Salvador is also famous for its popular festivities, effect of the religious African-indigenous-Catholic syncretism, starting in December and having as grand finale Carnival .
